Rather than compressing all of Japanese history into a timeline, begin with two familiar tools: money and the calendar.

A coin is a question, not just a date
Wadokaichin was issued in 708, but excavations established that Fuhonsen existed earlier. Ask what “first” means: made, used or widely circulated.
Edo-period money used gold, silver and cash coins with different units and exchange practices. Kan’ei Tsuho became widely used after official production expanded from 1636. There is no single reliable modern-yen equivalent for a ryo across all periods and comparisons.

Connections and changing systems
Edo Japan maintained several channels of exchange with neighboring peoples and countries. “Closed country” should not be read as complete isolation. The late-Edo gold outflow also needs to be understood through exchange arrangements and international differences in gold and silver values.
The yen was introduced in 1871; the Bank of Japan opened in 1882; its first banknotes followed in 1885. These were distinct stages in a changing monetary system.

Even an ordinary date has a history
The calendar reform announced in 1872 took effect in 1873. The earlier lunisolar calendar added an intercalary month in some years, not every year.
Look for what an object was used for, what evidence dates it, and what remains uncertain. This is an invitation to explore cultural history, not an assessment of coin prices, authenticity or investment value.
