Choosing a Japanese souvenir: start with the person, not the shelf
A practical checklist for T-shirts, fans and small gifts, without pretending one choice suits everyone.

A good souvenir can be a reminder of a particular day, or simply something a friend will enjoy using. Before browsing, decide who it is for and how it will fit into everyday life.

For a T-shirt, compare measurements
Do not treat S, M or L as a universal fit. Compare the product’s stated measurements with a T-shirt the recipient already likes. Check which measurements are shown and how they are taken. If no measurements are available, ask the seller before ordering.
Look at the material and care instructions too. A souvenir that needs a different washing routine may be less useful than one that fits the recipient’s habits.
For the design, ask what it says
If you choose Japanese lettering, read the product’s explanation or ask for a translation. A familiar-looking character is not enough to establish a phrase’s meaning. Choose a design because you like its story, rather than assuming every symbol has the same meaning everywhere.
For a smaller gift, check the details
A folding fan or small everyday object can be an alternative when clothing size is uncertain. Check dimensions, materials and intended use. If Japanese manufacture matters to you, check the origin of the individual item rather than inferring it from a Japanese motif.
Before you buy
Review the total cost, stock, shipping destination and returns information on the current product page. Do not assume airport pickup, international delivery or a tax-free price unless the seller confirms it.
